Every now and then you come across a band that have something different and you want to call them your own. Sons of Morning offer something different in a rock n roll wilderness. Extremely difficult to label the band and shelve them in a certain genre, but if I had to it would be Rock/Country with a Blues enthused underbelly with a hint of Modernist Post Punk. Sons Of Morning certainly have put together something special and when you listen to certain tracks you can hear snippets from sixties giants the Rolling Stones, the three 'super chords' from the Beatles, and also, I’m hearing American super rocker Tom Petty too. The rich and resonant bass lines throb and bounce from the Hoffner behind the crisp and exact guitar usually strung from a Gretsch Pro Jet or Les Paul and this generally dominates the Sons sound throughout each song, with the main theme being the Americana vocal which is somewhat developed in its own style, and finishes off a unique outing of pure brilliance. Summing up, The Sons offer a dramatic and intense, rhythmic, driving, angular sound that is quite contemporary though you must note each track has its own identity. Cut 19, Sons Of Morning's Maximum Rock N Roll version of Jimmy Reed's 'Baby What's Wrong?', is pedal to the metal R&B at its finest. Covered by the Stones and included on the classic bootleg 'Bright Lights, Big City', BWW showcases the Sons' talent for reviving this type of early 60's guitar band rock that swept the UK and US and brought us so many great bands in the wake of the British Invasion- while still making it their own. Fans of Sons Of Morning and music of this kind in general will not be disappointed as the American blues that spawned the beginnings of Beat music and the London scene once again heads back to the UK for this volume of Alan May's Glory Boy Mod Radio Showcase.

With roots firmly planted in pre-psychedelic 60’s Pop/Rock, Southern Blues, Down-home Country, and early American Punk, this self-titled album is a beat-driven joyride of infectious Rock’n’Roll! SOM harkens back to the times when Rock’n’Roll was as yet untamed…………….

Mixing influences that range from the British Invasion, down home country, and early punk, the Sons Of Morning have pulled this album from the depths of their musical souls! The result is pure, homegrown magic, reminiscent of what was once known to happen in the sound studios of early sixties London, or small town independant studios in the deep South. Throw in a bit of NYC grit and you might start to think you have a good idea of what 'The Sons' are about.... That is, until you listen to this album and realize its something different, yet every bit as exciting and inspired as the roots it sprang from. No trip down memory lane, the Sons Of Morning is as fresh and now as were the Beatles and Stones when they first assaulted the American youth from the stage of the Ed Sullivan Show. From the opening notes of 'Outta My Head' to the closing fade out of 'Shine', the songs are immediately catchy, yet deep enough to keep the true rock'n'roll enthusiast coming back again and again. On the technical side: Purists and gearheads alike will appreciate the SOM sound. Painstaking efforts were made to achieve the desired feel for this album. All tube amps, a choice selection of just the right stringed instruments - some of which are featured on the inside album cover - drums that sound like drums, recording methods, and production were all key elements in presenting an album with the warmth of the analog days and the added clarity only dreamed of for this kind of music- until now. The song selection is a tribute to the days when pop, rock'n'roll, and country songs would find themselves side by side on many top artists' albums. Instead of a few songs that sound like 'hits' being surrounded by filler, the goal was always an album filled with 'A' sides. The result is a cornucopia of top notch songs that plays like the Greatest Hits of your new favorite band. SONS OF MORNING. 'nuff said.
